This study investigates how being partially submerged in water and body position affect the way trained swimmers breathe. The focus is on understanding the pressure needed by the muscles used for breathing when swimmers are in water. Pulmonary mechanics refer to how the lungs and muscles work together to help a person breathe.
Participants will undergo procedures to measure the pressure generated by their breathing muscles. This involves being in a specific position while partially submerged in water. The study will explore how these conditions impact breathing in swimmers.
- Who can participate: Participants must be physically trained swimmers with at least 5 years of competitive swimming experience. They should not have any history of neurological disorders, heart or respiratory diseases, or other specified health conditions.
- Study details: Participants will be involved in procedures to measure breathing muscle pressure while partially submerged in water. The study will take place in Bloomington, IN, and participants will be compensated for their time.
