This study investigates how people perceive different regional dialects. It looks at how listeners can group these dialects and rate speakers from different regions based on their language attitudes. A dialect is a form of a language spoken in a particular area that may have its own words, grammar, and pronunciation.
Participants in the study will listen to various speakers and classify the dialects they hear. They will also rate these speakers as part of a language attitudes task. Participants will be compensated for their time.
- Who can participate: Individuals aged 18 to 24 who speak only English and have normal hearing can participate. Those who are bilingual or do not pass a hearing test will not be eligible.
- Study details: Participants will engage in tasks that involve listening to speakers and classifying dialects. They will also rate speakers based on their perceptions.
