Summary
The IU diabetes research group is collecting and storing blood samples that will be used to evaluate factors in the blood that are associated with diabetes and obesity or other diseases.
Description
This protocol will consist of the collection of either
1) A single ~43 mL sample of venous blood, along with a limited set of phenotypic and clinical laboratory data (if available). 2) A set of timed blood samples collected before and after a 75g oral glucose load, totaling ~270 mL, along with the same limited set of phenotypic and clinical laboratory data (if available)
This project is a component of the Translation Core of the NIH P-30 funded Indiana University Diabetes Research Center. We will be collecting samples from individuals with obesity and/or diabetes and from normal healthy controls (for comparison purposes). The sample will be either frozen (in sub-aliquots) or transferred fresh to a client laboratory in specific circumstances where this is needed. Frozen samples will be stored for up to 10 years, then discarded if not used. Samples will be transferred to a client laboratory within the IU or Indiana CTSI family. Use of these samples by client laboratories will take place under separate IRB-approved protocols. Along with the sample(s), a de-identified dataset including the phenotypic data described below will be provided. Sample transfers to client laboratories will be tracked, and the number of samples shared each year will be reported.
