Speech perception in second language Spanish during study abroad

  • STATUS
    Not Recruiting
Updated on 19 February 2024

Summary

This dissertation research will investigate how learners who are exposed to language variation during study abroad, particularly in the area of phonology (i.e., speech sounds and sound patterns in the language), do or do not learn to correctly perceive a particular speech sound when they hear it. These learners will be compared to learners who stay at home at their university in the US during the same time period. Furthermore, the research will seek to determine what factors, such as the amount of contact with native speakers of Spanish, language proficiency level, or the group to which the learner belongs (study abroad or at-home) predict which learners improve over the course of the semester and which ones do not.
