Evaluation of Cancer Cachexia by Computed Tomography Analysis

Summary

In this study we will use Slice-O-matic (Tomovision, Milletta, Magog, Canada), a computer software program, to analyze muscle and fat mass on CT scans of adult patients, ages 18 and above, with the following cancers: lung, pancreas, kidney, colorectal, esophageal, breast, ovarian, gastric, uterine, cervical, hepatocellular carcinoma, multiple myeloma, cholangiocarcinoma, and melanoma. We will also use the Slice-O-matic software to analyze muscle and fat mass on CT scans of pediatric patients, ages 17 and under, with the following cancers: neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, Wilm?s tumors, osteosarcoma, and Ewing?s sarcoma.

Finally we will use the Slice-O-matic software to analyze muscle and fat mass on CT scans in adult patients, ages 18 and above, and in pediatric patients, ages 17 and younger, without cancer or other chronic disease state associated with inflammation, anorexia or progressive decline (detailed below). These patients represent a normal group of patients that will serve as our control group to which we can compare our cachexia group.
