Summary
The proposed study is a randomized controlled trial designed to compare immediate and one-year outcomes for three family dispute resolution processes (traditional court-based litigation, shuttle mediation, and videoconferencing mediation) among cases with a self-reported level of intimate partner violence (IPV) history that would usually raise concerns about mediation as an option. This study will allow us to examine whether there are safer and, perhaps, more beneficial alternatives for families seeking services to settle family-related disputes and with high levels of IPV. It will also allow us to examine whether traditional court-based litigation (i.e., the current option for families with concerning levels of reported IPV) allows families to establish safe family arrangements that minimize risk of IPV victimization.
