Summary

The speech of deaf and hard-of-hearing people often has qualities that differ from the speech of typically-hearing people. These qualities may be viewed negatively by other people, and people may attribute other negative traits to D/HH speakers because of their speech. These biases may create social difficulties for D/HH people, potentially impacting their social development, self-esteem, and even later employment opportunities. This study seeks to identify the presence and nature of these biases.
