Summary

This research is based on the idea that the type and wording of questions about sex, gender, and sexual orientation conveys important information to participants about the philosophies and intentions of researchers who are asking these questions, and that this information may change participants? attitudes toward researchers and responses to the survey questions in ways that compromise research results.

In addition, this research explores the possibility that questions about sex, gender and sexual orientation convey different information depending on the context in which they are asked, and that the way participants think about these identities and label themselves may differ according to context. The results of this study may also shed light on the accuracy and usefulness of current conceptualizations of sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation, and their relationships to one another.
