Summary
In a prior study it has been found that as narratives are remembered and retold, surprise is a very salient feature that people hold on to. Participants showed a tendency to maintain consistent levels of surprise in up to the third retelling of a narrative, even when the causal details of the surprise were altered or dropped. The aim of the present study is to determine whether such a "surprise effect" is present in when subjects hear and attempt to recall melodies.
