The purpose of this study is to look at the potential positive effects of advisors writing letters of encouragement to their female doctoral advisees, and to understand the types of encouragement letters that are most effective, the psychological mechanisms that explain the benefits of the encouragement letters, and the types of students who benefit most from such encouragement letters.
