Retrospective re-classification of previously resected low and high grade gliomas based on molecular characteristics.

Summary
Historically, primary brain tumors (or gliomas) have been characterized into categories based on features of the cells (or histology). These categories are World Health Organization (WHO) grade I-IV. In general, WHO grade I-II tumors are considered low grade and WHO grade III-IV are considered high grade. These distinctions inform both prognosis and treatment options. Recently, gliomas have been tested for mutations or alterations in specific areas of their DNA which give more information about prognosis, namely IDH mutations and 1p19q codeletion. Given the differences in tumor behavior based on these new tests (or molecular characterization), some have proposed using these tests instead of (or in addition to) histology to inform treatment decisions. We proposed to retrospectively review the gliomas treated at our institution that have already been tested for these markers and re-classify them accordingly to test the hypothesis that these are important predictors of outcomes.
