Epidemiology of Metastatic Cancer of the Brain

Summary
Metastatic cancer to the brain is a growing problem; as patients live longer due to improved systemic cancer treatments they are living long enough to develop spread of their cancer to the brain because very few of our available chemotherapy agents can pass the blood-brain-barrier and be effective in brain tissue. Historically some cancers tend to spread to the brain more than others; these include specific subtypes of both lung and breast cancer as well as melanoma. It is unknown if the current distribution of brain metastases matches historical reports, therefore updating the cancer literature with a new assessment of which primary tumors tend to result in brain metastasis would help focus the field?s efforts in providing maximum impact for patients in research directions and treatment focus. We will compile the list of all patients with brain metastases treated at Indiana University in the last 20 years as well as the subgroup with symptomatic brain metastases requiring resection. These patients will then be divided by cancer subtype and we will compare the following between the different types of cancer: age at diagnosis, survival, and treatment.
