Summary
I am looking at how native English speakers (L1 speakers) change the way they talk to non-native English speakers (L2 speakers). It is documented and proven that there is an idea of ?foreigner talk?, that is, the simplified form of language used when speaking to people who are or who are perceived to be not fluent in English. This is through word choice, speed of speech, and simplified syntax. In this experiment, I want to see how people simplify their speech if they have knowledge of the second participant?s first language- in this case, Spanish. My hypothesis is that they will use their knowledge of Spanish to produce forms that are more similar to Spanish forms, even if it means producing non-standard forms in English.
