Correlation Between ECMO Circuit Change and Patient Outcomes

  • STATUS
    Not Recruiting
Updated on 19 February 2024

Summary

Extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation is an advanced care modality that can support patients with heart and/or lung failure until those organs recover. It involves remove blood from the body through a larger catheter, running it through a circuit of artificial tube, a pump, and a membrane oxygenator that removes carbon dioxide and adds oxygen to the blood. The circuit can also be used for medication administration and hemodialysis. Some patients require this external circuit to be changed from time to time during the ECMO run for excessive bleeding, clotting, or mechanical failure. Our hypothesis is that these patients who require ECMO circuit change are more likely to die and/or suffer other complications of ECMO. This relationship has never been expressly studied. Our goal is to determine the outcomes of patients requiring one or more ECMO circuit changes.
