The Assessment of Fecal Volatile Compounds in Neonates

Summary

The assessment of fecal volatile organic compounds has been used to create a distinct ?smell print? of individuals. This ?smell-print? can then be correlated to specific microbial strains within the intestinal track to predict onset of intestinal disease or success of treatment. In this regard, the Cyranose is a mobile tool to assess fecal organic volatile compounds. In retrospective studies, it was able to predict the diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis up to three days prior to onset. However, given that the intestinal microbiome is dependent on an individual?s geography and food source, it is likely that the ?smell-print? will also vary on these factors. This may make utilizing the device to predict the presence of necrotizing enterocolitis somewhat challenging. In order to rectify this factor, we need to assess infants in various regions and on different types of formula. We therefore hypothesized that the Cryanose ?smell-print? would vary in healthy infants based on their geographic location of birth and in the formula that they were receiving for enteral nutrition.
