Summary
Earlier work on a single campus has shown that a 2.5 hour workshop that: (1) shows faculty their own implicit biases and the benefits of bias reduction; (2) introduces them to the underlying constructs of gender bias; and (3) provides them with evidence-based strategies to self-regulate bias, will result in individuals who are more aware of their own bias, are more motivated to reduce it, have the self-efficacy to reduce it, and (if 25% or more of their department members participate with them) increase their self-reported ACTION to reduce bias. In addition, department climate improves and more diverse faculty are hired in departments that participate in the workshop; the largest group of participants in this original study were faculty in the Department of Medicine at UW-Madison. This study extends the study to Departments of Medicine (DOMs) at other universities, to examine whether these effects generalize beyond a single institution.
