"Humanness and Uncanniness with Perceptual Mismatch of Voice and Visual Modalities in Robotics"

Updated on 19 February 2024

Summary

When something is perceived as strange, particularly in an unsettling way, we see this impact as uncanny, but does certain manipulation of sound with human-robot interaction impact this effect? Currently, most research only has addressed perception of sound in psychology focusing on prosody and speech communication as well as in media arts discussing potential for uncanny sound in video games and movies; however, little has been addressed directly on this impact in human-robot interaction. Since this topic is yet to be fully broached before in this area, an initial online study will be done to gather what key impacts with have a significant effect of uncanniness.

For this study I want to know
(1) Where is the boundary of perceptual mismatch, a discrepancy in interpreting sensory information, between visual and auditory modalities in robotics and
(2) How will this impact people?s perception of humanness and eeriness of the robots shown in the study? I will be focusing on investigating the perceptual mismatch concept of identifying uncanniness.
