Supporting Teachers to Promote Students' Mathematical Generalization

  • STATUS

Updated on 19 February 2024

Summary

Generalizing is important as both a process and content standard in mathematics education because it is one of the vehicles through which new mathematical learning takes place. Given the importance of generalizing, mathematics education researchers have studied a number of facets of this phenomenon. There is, however, a dearth of research about how: a. college level students generalize in advanced mathematical domains; and b. how teachers learn to design and implement instruction that supports secondary students to generalize. The proposed project will investigate both of these issues in a year-long design research study conducted with four secondary pre-service teachers (PSTs). As such it will contribute to the body of research on generalizing.
