Summary
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) is a large, multifaceted project that annually collects valid, reliable, usable data about college student experiences and institutional performance. It is both a research project and a source of assessment data for participating colleges and universities in the United States and Canada. Created in 1999 under the auspices of a grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts, the primary purpose of the survey is to meet growing accountability demands for evidence about student learning and institutional improvement. Almost all survey questions relate to desired college outcomes.
Now self-supporting through institutional participation fees, NSSE has become the instrument of choice for assessing process indicators of quality in undergraduate education. In testimony to the US Department of Education?s ?Commission on the Future of Higher Education,? Peter Ewell (April 7, 2006) said:
NSSE is as good as it gets at the moment as a tool for examining institutional and student behaviors related to learning?practices that point directly to things that faculty and institutional leaders can do something about...It is increasingly harnessing Web-based administration technology and is now the center of a family of instruments including surveys administered to faculty to provoke useful conversations.
In addition to being a credible source of information to guide institutional improvement, NSSE is a research project. Its scale and content make it a rich source of data about how different students experience college and how different approaches to teaching and learning affect student and institutional performance.
