Summary
The Foundations in Science and Mathematics (FSM) summer program offers two week courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science designed to help high school students prepare for their upcoming classes and encourage interest in STEM disciplines. We are seeking permission from the IRB to utilize data collected from this program in education research. All data being collected results from normal classroom activities, except for self-reported student GPAs and completion of a pre- and post-survey about their interest in STEM. Specifically, we seek to obtain three types of data. First, we will analyze student performance using the worksheets, projects, and tests the students complete as part of the summer program. We hope to document the success of this program and publish information about its design and performance, as well as information about how different activities and teaching methods impact learning. Second, we will use self-reported school GPA to normalize some of these results and search for a correlation between general academic performance and attitudes towards group study in the classroom. Third, we hope to find out how the course(s) may have impacted their interest in STEM.
