Trafficking of Cells in Lung Inflammation

Summary
This study allows the principal investigator to use bronchoalveolar lavage cells and fluid from clinical specimens that are routinely discarded. Currently, our CLIA-approved Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL) Laboratory at Indiana University receives specimens from physicians requesting a standardized cellular analysis of BAL cells. These samples are always obtained after clinical informed consent for bronchoscopy. Typically, we require between 2 and 14 cytospins for complete interpretation. This represents approximately 1/10 of the total number of cells received in the sample. On rare occasions stored acellular BAL may be used for clinical purposes (ie fungal antigentesting, antibody testing).
The co-investigators have a longstanding interest in BAL fluid and cellular analysis. Some of the cells may be used immmediately, while some cells and the majority of BAL fluid will be frozen for later use. Utilization of ?leftover? fluid and cells would allow us to further explore the mechanism of recruitment and proliferation of certain cell populations (macrophages, neutrophils, eosinophils, and lymphocyte subsets) in the lung.
