Compartmental bone adaptation in female collegiate-level athletes competing in unilateral dominant sports

Summary

Exercise is promoted as a means of improving bone health as the skeleton responds and adapts to mechanical forces. Previous studies have demonstrated that unilateral loading associated with tennis and fast-pitch softball pitching induces unilateral adaptation; however, its remains unknown whether the unilateral adaptation primarily occurs in the cortical or trabecular compartment (or both) of a bone. This cross-sectional cohort study will investigate female collegiate-level athletes who participate in unilateral dominant sports (tennis and fast-pitch softball) with the aim of assessing the effect of mechanical loading/exercise on cortical and trabecular/cancellous bone compartments in the arms and legs.
