Summary
The Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE) is a large project that annually collects valid, reliable, usable data about law student experiences and institutional performance. It is both a research project and a source of assessment data for participating law schools in the United States, Canada and Australia. Created in 2003, the primary purpose of the survey is to meet growing accountability demands for evidence about student learning and institutional improvement. Almost all survey questions relate to desired law school outcomes.
Self-supporting through institutional participation fees, LSSSE has become the instrument of choice for assessing process indicators of quality in law school education. In addition to being a credible source of information to guide institutional improvement, LSSSE is a research project. Its large, expanding scale and random sampling techniques make it a rich source of data about how different students experience law school and how different approaches to teaching and learning affect student and institutional performance.
Law schools that elect to participate in the study provide LSSSE with a list of currently registered J.D. or L.L.B. students. LSSSE contacts each student via email to invite them to complete the web-based survey instrument.
